A description of our program

Sea Scout Ship 601, City of Roses is one of the oldest Sea Scout Ships in the US. It was origionally started in 1929 and was initially named Viking. The name was changed in 1939 to City of Roses. The City of Portland, OR is known as "The City of Roses".

The Ship is sponsored by the Fleet Reserve Assn., Branch 55 "City of Roses"

The Ship meets twice a week at the Sea Scout Base , Tuesday evenings from 1900 to 2100, and Saturdays from 0900 to 1700. From October to May we meet at the Rivercrest Community Church on Tuesdays, instead of the Sea Scout Base.

We try to make our program as hands on as possible. Our goal is to get a boat underway at least 4 times a month.

We follow a strict uniform guideline. The work uniform for the crew is USN Dungaree trousers and chambray shirt and basball style hat with unit name and number. The dress blue uniform is a modified USN Enlisted Dress Blue uniform. We have chosen to not wear dress whites.

The meetings are run by the crew, with guidance from the adults.

Most of the maintenance is done by the crew, with the exception of tasks that are too dangerous for them to perform. They are all familiar with sandpaper, wrenches and oily rags.
